Introduction to Techne: Data Science and AI

Every organization needs people who can work with data, who can clean, organize, and visualize the information which matters. This course, an introduction to data science, covers the skills most likely to help you land an internship. We make extensive use of generative AI because it is a critical tool in the modern workplace.

Instructor: David Kane; Heiser Natural Sciences (HNS) 153; dakane@ncf.edu.

Time: MWF 10:00-11:50 for ISC-2076-005 in HNS 108 and 11:00-11:50 for ISC-2076-006 in HNS 203.

See here for details on my teaching philosophy. See also the final projects created by prior students. Want to make something like that? Take the course!

There are no prerequisites. The programming language we will be using is R. You must have a computer (or a tablet with a physical keyboard) which can access the internet. Your computer/tablet can be very old and slow. All our computing is done in the cloud, so you don’t need a powerful machine. The course material is all free, but you may have to spend up to $40 for direct access to a leading AI model. (We are hoping to subsidize this so that the cost to you is much lower.) The course is designed for absolute beginners. Neither programming nor statistics experience is required.
